China Wine Competition Winners To Be Announced On November 25

22/11/2019

China Wine Competition winners to be announced globally on 25th November, 2019.

Contemporary art pieces, along with red and white decor graced the walls of the China Wine Competition’s 2019 venue. The first edition of the China Wine Competition, that took place in Shanghai on the 4th of November invited wine industry professionals from China, and across the wine spectrum around the world.

Beverage Trade Network, organizers of China Wine Competition will be announcing the winners of the competition on 25th November, 2019.

Judges at the China Wine Competition assessed a range of the known, unknown and everything in between wines, brands, varietals, and countries that will proceed to find their place on the racks of large retail chains, prominent high-end restaurants, and other on-premise establishments such as bars, pubs, and more.

The China Wine Competition boasts of having highly qualified and trained panel of wine buyers and wine experts.  All judges in the China Wine Competition are involved directly in the buying and trading of wines in China. As the mission and philosophy of the China Wine Competition is to award wines by quality, value and package for the China market, all our judges are from mainland China who understand the Chinese palate.

Five teams of judges sat down and tasted over 350 wines from across the world. The first edition of the China Wine Competition saw wines from over 25 countries, including entries from prominent wine producing countries such as Australia, France, Italy, Spain, USA, and South Africa - to lesser known wine regions such as Azerbaijan, Uruguay, Kazakhstan, Malta, Slovakia, and many more.

The wines are judged individually on the basis of Quality, Value, and Packaging, and scores are taken uniquely to add up and build the overall final score. Quality being judged first, is judged blind like any other wine competition. Each wine bottle is wrapped in an opaque bag without the bottle or label being seen. Judges are asked to score the wine based solely on its’ quality. The value of the wine is then determined by the judges based on the quality and its’ retail price.

Then comes one of the most important aspects; packaging. Packaging is said to be a key player when consumers purchase wines, as they buy with their eyes first. The judges are handed the bottle or format for them to be able to assess, in detail, the design, label, and packaging and determine how well that matches up to, or complements the quality of the wine and its price point. It is how the product is perceived when placed on the wine shelf among thousands of other wines.

A separate weighted score is given for each of the three parts of the judging process. The scores are added up to give a final score.

  • Quality Score: will be marked out of 50
  • Value Score: will be marked out of 25
  • Package Score: will be marked out of 25

Along with awarding wines with Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals - the China Wine Competition also recognizes seven other special category awards for the wines, including:

  • Wine Of The Year
  • Winery Of The Year
  • Best Wine Of The Year (By Quality Category)
  • Best Wine Of The Year (By Value Category)
