d'Arenberg’s Coppermine Road 2016 from Australia won the “Best in the show by Varietal,” along with a Gold medal at the 2019 China Wine Competition held in Shanghai on 4 November.

Stylish and suave, 2016 the Coppermine Road has highlights of violets and blackcurrant that meld deliciously with roasted tomato and capsicum characters. This Cabernet Sauvignon is vibrant, aromatic and powerful. The nose bursts with blackberry, beetroot, and alpine herbs. Whereas, the palate is earthy and medium weight, with coarse tannins and spicy acidity. This wine is elegant, yet brutish, showing great balance and character. The tannins and acidity need time to soften. 

The wine “Coppermine Road” got its name from the road that runs parallel to the winery’s very best Cabernet vineyard in McLaren Vale, just meters from the winery, cellar door, and restaurant

For 2016 the Coppermine Road, small batches of grapes were gently crushed and then were transferred to five tonnes headed down open fermenters. These batches were kept separate until final blending. The barrel ferments for 2016 the Coppermine Road are aged on the lees, there was no racking until final blending.

Talking about the winery - d’Arenberg’s, all d’Arenberg wines are grown in the McLaren Vale region of Australia. McLaren Vale is home to some of the oldest vines in the country, dating as far back as 1850. 

The wines in d'Arenberg have been basket pressed, reds and whites, with all red ferments foot trod during fermentation. All d’Arenberg estate owned and leased vineyards are NASAA Certified for organic and biodynamic processes.

This natural and environmentally friendly philosophy encourages strong root systems that penetrate the soil, resulting in lively tannin structures, soil characters, and fine minerality. These practices also ensure that yields are kept low with concentrated flavors and excellent natural acidity.

To evaluate the entrants, the China Wine Competition invites a leading panel of top-level wine industry experts where wines are judged on the three parameters of Quality, Value, and Packaging.
